1. What is AIDS?

A: AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.

Acquired – means that the disease is not hereditary but develops after birth from contact with a disease causing agent (in this case, HIV).

Immunodeficiency – means that the disease is characterized by a weakening of the immune system.

Syndrome – refers to a group of symptoms that collectively indicate or characterize a disease. In the case of AIDS this can include the development of certain infections and/or cancers, as well as a decrease in the number of certain cells in a person’s immune system.

A diagnosis of AIDS is made by a physician using specific clinical or laboratory standards.

2. What is Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up?

A: Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up is a growing partnership between the American Foundation for Children with AIDS (AFCA) and outdoor recreation enthusiasts.  Together with our sponsors, we invite climbers, hikers, cyclists, and runners everywhere to bring awareness to the pediatric AIDS pandemic and to raise funds so AFCA can continue to send life saving anti-retroviral (ARV) medication, food and medical supplies to children affected by HIV/AIDS in Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

3. Who can participate?

A: Anyone can! This is a fundraising event for adults, children, families, individuals and teams to support AFCA’s work.

4. Can I raise that much money in a few months?

A: Yes, you can. Throw a party, a silent auction, raffle, or poker tournament. Ask friends, family and coworkers. Write hand-written notes, fundraise online, make phone calls and follow-up. Explain the cause. Tell people your fundraising goal. Then ask again. We understand that raising this amount of money can be scary, but once you get started you'll be surprised at how much fun you'll have. See fundraising tips for more tips.

5. When do I receive my t-shirt and prizes?

A: If you’d like to receive a t-shirt, you must pay an additional $10 fee.  Your t-shirt will be mailed to you when this $10 fee is received. Prizes will be announced by October 30th, 2009, after all donations are tallied and accounted for.

Donations and pledge fulfillments received after October 15, 2009 will be credited to Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up 2010.

6. How do I sign up?

A: You can register for Climb Up So Kids Can Grow Up events online, by fax or by regular mail. A deposit of $25 is required per participant (even if part of a team) to be registered.  See individual events to register.

7. I'd like to get my company to sponsor my race. Do you have any corporate sponsorship programs?

A: We do! Please click the link for our Corporate Sponsorship page to find out more.

8. How can I keep track of my fundraising?

A: If you chose to create a www.firstgiving.com/afca fundraising page, you’ll be able to see your progress on your own page.  We also send you emails detailing donations received in the office, with the name and contact information of the donor, as well as the amount of the donation.  At any point, you can ask us and we will let you know how you are doing fundraising-wise.

9. I'm not an athlete. Can I still make a financial contribution?

A: Absolutely!  You can sponsor a specific individual or team or you can make a general donation towards our program.  If you wish to sponsor an specific athlete, click here to make a donation on their behalf.  Make sure you include the participant’s name in the “comments” section!

10. Are donations tax deductible?

A: American Foundation for Children with AIDS is a 501(c)(3) tax-deductible, nonprofit organization and our tax ID is 30-0247823. For a copy of AFCA’s 501(c)3 determination letter, please contact AFCA at info@helpchildrenwithaids.org.

All donations made on behalf of a participant by someone else are fully tax-deductible.

If you donate on behalf of your own climb, the tax-deductible amount of your donation is equal to the total donation minus the value of goods and services you have received in return. This should be discussed with your accountant.

Please make checks out to “AFCA” with the participant’s name inserted in the Memo line.

11. What does AFCA do with the donations?

A: AFCA provides free anti-retroviral medication, medicine to combat opportunistic infections, food, and medical/humanitarian supplies to our partner hospitals, clinics and projects in Sub-Saharan Africa.  The money you raise is used to provide these medications and items to HIV+ children, their HIV+ guardians and HIV+ pregnant women. For more information visit www.helpchildrenwithaids.org.

12. What is American Foundation for Children with AIDS?

A: AFCA is a non-profit organization that helps HIV+/AIDS children and their guardians in sub-Saharan Africa who have no other access to aid.  AFCA is an efficient and highly effective grass roots organization that acts primarily as a conduit between the extreme needs of accredited partners in Sub-Saharan Africa and the vast resources of the western world.   AFCA provides readily available, life-saving anti-retroviral medicine, medical equipment and supplies, nutritional supplements, and emergency supplies that are requested by our partners for the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS so that the afflicted, at-risk children can have hope to grow up free of the devastating effects of this disease.

Currently, AFCA is working in Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
